A Code of Ethics for Marketers from the American Marketing Association's “Ethical Norms and Values form Marketers”

Marketing practitioners must recognize that they not only serve their enterprises but also act as stewards of society in creating, facilitating, and executing the efficient and effective transactions that are part of the greater economy.

Key professional values:

  • Honesty—to be truthful and forthright in our dealings with customers and stakeholders
  • We will tell the truth in all situations and at all times.
  • We will honor our explicit and implicit commitments and promises.
  • Responsibility—to accept the consequences of our marketing decisions and strategies
  • We will make strenuous efforts to serve the needs of our customers.
  • We will avoid using coercion with all stakeholders.
  • We will acknowledge the social obligations to stakeholders that come with increased marketing and economic power.
  • We will recognize our special commitments to economically vulnerable segments of the market such as children, the elderly, and others who may be substantially disadvantaged.
  • Fairness—to try to balance justly the needs of the buyer with the interests of the seller
  • We will represent our products in a clear way in selling, advertising, and other forms of communication; this includes avoidance of false, misleading, and deceptive promotion.
  • We will reject manipulations and sales tactics that harm customer trust.
  • We will not knowingly participate in material conflicts of interest.
  • Respect—to acknowledge the basic human dignity of all stakeholders
  • We will value individual differences even as we avoid stereotyping customers or depicting demographic groups (e.g., gender, race, or sexual orientation) in a negative or dehumanizing way in our promotions.

A Code of Ethics for Advertisers from the American Association of Advertising Agencies

Standards of Practice Advertisers “must recognize an obligation, not only to their clients, but to the public, the media they employ, and to each other. … Unethical competitive practices in the advertising agency business lead to financial waste, dilution of service, diversion of manpower, loss of prestige, and tend to weaken public confidence both in advertisements and in the institution of advertising.”

Creative Code:

We, the members of the American Association of Advertising Agencies, in addition to supporting and obeying the laws and legal regulations pertaining to advertising, undertake to extend and broaden the application of high ethical standards. Specifically, we will not knowingly create advertising that contains:

  • False or misleading statements or exaggerations, visual or verbal
  • Testimonials that do not reflect the real opinion of the individual(s) involved
  • Price claims that are misleading
  • Claims insufficiently supported or that distort the true meaning or practicable application of statements made by professional or scientific authority
  • Statements, suggestions or pictures offensive to public decency or minority segments of the population. We recognize that there are areas that are subject to honestly different interpretations and judgment. Nevertheless, we agree not to recommend to an advertiser, and to discourage the use of, advertising that is in poor or questionable taste or that is deliberately irritating through aural or visual content or presentation.

We Can Be Flexible and Responsive

Internal marketing departments are often overwhelmed with day-to-day tactical grind, which makes it difficult for marketers to put up their feet and focus on strategic initiatives. On the other hand, marketing agencies like Key Concepts Marketing specialize in creating and executing marketing strategies and have dedicated teams to work on each project, allowing us to be more responsive and adapt to changes quickly.

We Have More Resources

As a full-service marketing agency, we have more resources than solo marketers or internal teams, including access to the latest tools and technologies, as well as experienced professionals in various areas of marketing. This means that we are better equipped to handle complex projects and can provide our clients with a wider range of services than internal teams or solo marketers.

We Take a Collaborative Approach to Marketing

At Key Concepts Marketing, we have a more collaborative approach, which involves working closely with our clients to ensure that our marketing strategies are aligned with their overall business objectives. This ensures that the marketing efforts are more effective in driving business growth and meeting the client’s goals. In contrast, internal marketing teams may be limited by their organization’s culture and hierarchy, which can hinder their ability to be flexible and responsive.

We Keep Up With New Technologies and Trends

An advantage of working with a marketing agency like KCM is our ability to keep up with the fast-moving industry trends and the ever-changing digital landscape. We have our finger on the pulse of the latest industry developments and are constantly learning and adapting to stay ahead of the competition.
